A fiscal conservative with a strong law enforcement background, Gary Jeandron, has earned the California Farm Bureau Federation endorsement for election in the state's 80th Assembly District.

Jeandron, a Republican, retired last year as police chief of Palm Springs and currently serves on the Palm Springs Unified School District board. He seeks to replace Assembly Member Bonnie Garcia, R-Cathedral City, who has served the maximum three terms and has also endorsed Jeandron.

"Gary Jeandron understands the importance of making sure that family farms and ranches remain truly sustainable, both economically and environmentally," California Farm Bureau President Doug Mosebar said. "He recognizes the need to reduce government regulation so that businesses can create more jobs."

The 80th Assembly District includes key agricultural regions in Imperial County and eastern Riverside County. Farmers and ranchers in the two counties produce more than $2.6 billion worth of crops and commodities each year, providing a plentiful supply of locally grown food and farm products.

Mosebar cited Jeandron's 30-plus years of law enforcement experience as another plus.

"Increasingly, farmers and ranchers face big-city crime problems in the country," he said. "As a former police chief, Gary Jeandron will be a voice for policies and programs that help rural residents prevent crime and prosecute those who commit it."

The California Farm Bureau Federation, the state's largest farm organization, works to protect family farms and ranches on behalf of 91,000 members statewide.
